Does Bread Make You Fat?

Many people find that when they stop eating bread they lose weight, and this leads to the question of how bread could cause weight gain? Certainly in some individuals bread does not cause weight gain as bread has been a staple food for many people for much of recorded history and obesity is a relatively new phenomenon. Therefore there is something relating to modern times that may cause bread to have detrimental effects. Certainly one factor that may contribute to the detrimental effects of bread is the high energy diet that is often consumed alongside it. In this regard, bread eaten as part of a lower energy diet may provide useful energy whereas bread as part of a high energy diet may simply result in stimulation of the fat storage pathway and lead to the accumulation of body fat. Another problem with modern bread is that it is often produced with the addition of chemicals, and can also encourage overeating due to the fact that people find its tastes pleasant and this can cause it to be overconsumed.
