Chlorophytum borivilianum: Mechanisms of Action

Chlorophytum borivilianum is a plant that belongs to the lily family. The plant grows to a height of about 1.5 meters in tropical and subtropical parts of India. Chlorophytum borivilianum is used in a number of Ayurvedic formulas where it is claimed to have effects on the central nervous system, and it iss accepted to have general health tonic effects. There is some evidence that the plant produces anti-stress effects in humans, and this may explain the mood elevating effects of the plant. Consistent anxiolytic effects are seen with extracts of Chlorophytum borivilianum and this suggests that it possesses anxiolytic effects in animals. However, animal experiments suggest that Chlorophytum borivilianum is not able to affect the GABA system in the brains of animals, and this is strong evidence that it may work through alternative neurotransmitter systems, perhaps serotonergic or dopaminergic neuronal pathways. The anxiolytic effects of the plant are not associated with any sedative effects further supporting a lack of GABA interaction.
