Pulsatilla nigricans: An Anti-Anxiety Herb

Pulsatilla nigricans is a flowering plant that belongs to the buttercup or Ranunculaceae family of plants. These plants can be found growing throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Pulsatilla nigricans is used in traditional medicine as a treatment for a number of conditions including  nervousness, sadness, mild restlessness and mental unrest. This suggests that the plant can modify central nervous system function and may possess mood elevating and sedative properties. The anti-anxiety effects of Pulsatilla nigricans has been investigated in experimental animal models. In one such study, mice were administered extracts of Pulsatilla nigricans and then exposed to experimental stress. The results showed that the plant extracts were significantly beneficial at reducing the anxious behaviour of the mice. When the extracts were analysed, polyphenols and tannins were both found in the samples, suggesting these phytochemicals may have been responsible for the effects.
