Fenugreek and Body Composition

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is a herb that may possess specific health effects. Fenugreek is used in a number of different ways including for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, inflammatory conditions, glucose and insulin regulation and as a sport supplement. With regard to the latter, fenugreek has been shown to be a benefit to resistance trained athletes because of its hormone altering effects. For example, researchers administered a 240 mg fenugreek supplement standardised for 20 % protodioscin to resistance training athletes and measured their performance parameter and body composition. The results of the study showed that the fenugreek supplement significantly increased lean body mass compared to subjects consuming a placebo supplement. In addition, the supplement significantly elevated testosterone levels, which may have been the reason for the increase in lean body mass. Fenugreek supplements may therefore have significant benefits to weight training athletes.
