Can Probiotics Elevate Mood?

Probiotics are bacteria populations that can be taken as food or supplements. Yoghurts are a food form of probiotics. Probiotics survive the acid environment of the stomach and then pass to the small intestine where they grow. Evidence suggests that the consumption of certain types of gram positive bacteria, particularly acid producing bacteria, may have beneficial health effects. Studies show that bacteria in the gut communicate with endogenous cells in the wall of the intestine, and this can lead to immune and brain function changes. Probiotics are able to influence neurotransmission from the gut, and through communication with the brain through the vagus nerve, these neurotransmitters may affect mental health. Probiotic may also improve the resistance to stress, and this may in turn decrease the likelihood of developing a mood disorder. Some studies have shown that consumption of probiotics may reduce anxious symptoms. Maintaining a healthy gut population may therefore be pivotal to maintaining mental health.
