Zataria multiflora: Mood Elevation Through Reductions in Inflammation?

Zataria multiflora is a flowing plant that belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family of plants. The plant grows native to Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The plant is used as a traditional medicine in the treatment of conditions because of its painkilling, disinfectant, antioxidant and anti- inflammatory effects. Evidence suggests that Zataria multiflora may have medicinal effects that make it a useful treatment for anxiety and depression, and this may relate to its anti-inflammatory properties. For example, researchers administered Zataria multiflora to rats and then exposed them to conditions that induced anxious and depressive behaviour. The results of the study suggested that rats treated with Zataria multiflora extract displayed significantly less anxious and depressive behaviour compared to control rats who received no herb. The researchers then analysed the inflammatory responses in the rats and observed a significant reduction in inflammation in the rats treated with Zataria multiflora compared to controls.
