As a family group, Rubiaceae family plants may have significant medicinal effects. One common biochemical feature of the Rubiaceae plants is their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. These effects may contribute significantly to their therapeutic activity, which may include effects on the central nervous system. For example, Gardenia jasminoides has been shown to possess significant antidepressant activity and Rubia cordifolia root may increase brain levels of the neurotransmitter GABA. The flowers of Ixora coccinea have also been shown to have an anxiolytic effect. Therefore Rubiaceae plants may confer protection against mood disorders through their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
