Moringa Oleifera: Antidepressant Herb?

Plant contain a range of phytochemicals and many of these have been shown to benefit mental health. Much of this benefit comes from the ability of plant chemicals to reduce inflammation and inhibit cortisol release, two processes intricately linked to the development of mood disorders. A number of studies have investigated the effects of herbs for their ability to treat depression and in this regard many have shown beneficial effects. For example, in one study, Moringa oleifera, also known as the drumstick tree, was investigated for its antidepressant effects in mice. Mice were administered either fluoxetine or Moringa oleifera extract for 14 days and their behaviour tested. The results of the study showed that Moringa oleifera extract showed significant antidepressant effects in the mice. These effects were particularly apparent when the Moringa oleifera extracts were given in combination with fluoxetine. Therefore Moringa oleifera may have particular effects as an antidepressant herb.
