Ginseng: Still King of the Adaptogens?

Ginseng (Panax ginseng) has a long use in traditional medicine as an adaptogenic herb. The properties of ginseng allow it to improve the recovery of individuals as it is thought to modulate the release of stress hormones. Evidence supports ginseng in the maintenance of physical and mental performance. However, as plant research proceeds, more and more plants are being discovered with similar effects. Some of these include Withania somnifera, Gotu kola and Bacopa monnieri. Research suggests that similarities exist between the phytochemistry of these plants and that they may act in similar ways to ginseng. Therefore, it has become apparent that ginseng is not the unique plant it was once thought to be, and its properties are available through a number of different herbs. Some difference may exist between the activity of these herbs and further research is needed into these differences. However, although other plants exist with similar effects, there is little evidence to suggest that they are better than ginseng in this regard.
