Fenugreek Extract: Testosterone Levels

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) may have certain effects on hormone levels in humans and animals. The reason for these effects is thought to be the presence of steroidal saponins within certain parts of the plant, particularly the seeds. However, studies are inconsistent and if testosterone increases are evident it is likely that they are slight. The mechanisms by which fenugreek increase testosterone may be several and include the inhibition of cortisol, the main stress hormone, reduction in the 5-alpha reductase or aromatase enzymes, or though changes in the biochemistry of the brain causing elevation of catecholamine synthesis. Overall, fenugreek could be considered an effective supplement for elevating testosterone, and this may be particularly useful for aging men or for those with reduced sex drive. However, it is unclear if the elevation in testosterone translates into increases in lean mass. It is likely that for this to happen resistance training would need to be combined with the fenugreek extracts.
