Does D-Aspartate Supplementation Reduce Oestrogen Levels?

D-aspartate (D-aspartic acid) is a supplement that may have a number of effects on mammalian hormonal regulation. One controversial aspect of D-aspartate supplementation is whether or not the supplements are able to elevate testosterone in healthy men. This effect would be beneficial to athletes who require increased strength or reduced levels of body fat. In one study researchers found that supplementation with D-aspartate was not effective at raising testosterone in healthy men during a resistance training protocol, and did not cause improvements in strength. However, one key finding from this study was the fact that D-aspartate was able to reduce the level of oestradiol, one of the forms of oestrogen in humans. The 16 % reduction in oestrogen may suggest that D-aspartate is able to reduce conversion of testosterone to oestrogens through inhibition of the aromatase activity. Or it may suggest that the excretion of oestrogens is increased. Either way this is an interesting finding that may have nutritional significance.
