Curcumin is the primary curcumoid in turmeric (Curcuma longa). Turmeric is sometimes called Indian Saffron due to its bright yellow colour, and it is used extensively in Ayurvedic Traditional Medicine for its therapeutic effects. Curcumin may be an effective antidepressant and this may relate to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. A number of studies have investigated the effects of curcumin on mental health. In a meta-analysis study, researcher analysed previous literature to identify studies that had investigated the mood elevating effects of curcumin. In this regard, the researchers assessed the effects of curcumin in 6 human clinical trials to assess its overall effectiveness against depression. Pooling the results from the studies showed that curcumin was associated with significant improvements in depressive symptoms as measured on the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. In addition, 3 of the trials showed significant improvements in anxious symptoms with curcumin administration.
