Coffee: The Forgotten Health Drink?

Coffee is wrongly associated with negative health effects. This may relate to the fact that coffee is often associated with behaviours that may have negative health effects, such as a desire to sleep less, a hectic lifestyle, the requirement for stimulation due to fatigue and other type A personality traits. Studies suggest that regular consumption of coffee may provide important health benefits to the consumer. The most obvious of these are the benefits of caffeine, which can include weight loss and protection from dementia. In this regard, coffee consumption has a similar protective effect to tea, which also contains caffeine. In addition, coffee also contains a number of polyphenolic antioxidants that may confer protection against cardiovascular disease and cancer. Tea also contains polyphenolic antioxidants, and tea is associated with similar protective effects. Fresh ground coffee may have superior effects to the instant form because the latter is more heavily processed and this may reduce the amount of antioxidants present.
