Tea: How Much is Too Much?

Tea is a healthy drink that may confer significant health benefits to consumers. In particular, tea has been evidenced to protect from cardiovascular disease, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases such Parkinson’s disease. The beneficial effects of tea are likely brought about through a combination of caffeine, antioxidants such as tannins and catechins, as well as the amino acid L-theanine. It is difficult to make predictions on the number of cups of tea that are required to provide protective effects, as these likely differ between individuals and between types of tea. Certainly for some diseases there seems to be an increase in health effects with multiple cups drunk per day. At some point it is likely that the negative effects of caffeine may outweigh the positive effects of the other components, but again, this will vary significantly between individuals. As a rule of thumb, drinking tea throughout the day when desired appears to confer significant protective effects on the Japanese without any obvious detrimental effects.
