Betulinic Acid: Anxiolytic Terpenoid Phytochemical

Betulinic acid is a phytochemical that belongs to the pentacyclic terpenoid group of plant chemicals. Betulinic acid has a number of health effects in humans and animals that include anti-inflammatory, antimalarial and antiviral effects. The anti-inflammatory effects of betulinic acid are interesting as this may suggest it possesses beneficial effects against mood disorders. A number of studies have shown that terpenoids may possess significant mood elevating effects in humans and animals, although the mechanism is not fully understood. Betulinic acid is present in a number of plants including the Chinese date tree (Ziziphus mauritiana), common self heal (Prunella vulgaris), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), white birch (Betula pubescens), Quisqualis fructus, Coussarea paniculata, pasque flower (Pulsatilla chinensis), Tetracera boiviniana, the jambul (Syzygium formosanum), and flowering quince (Pseudocydonia sinensis). Betulinic acid is often found in high concentrations in the bark of plants.
