Ginseng Saponins

Panax ginseng is a herb that has been shown to possess a number of health effects. The health effects of Panax ginseng may relate to the saponins that it contains. The saponins from ginseng are called ginsenosides, and they are mainly concentrated in the root. The number of ginsenosides is large and they are categorised into a number of classes based on their structure. It is thought that over 100 different ginsenosides exist in ginseng. It is difficult to show the ginsenosides that have biological effects in humans and animals, but there is evidence that ginsenosides are generally bioavailable and exert their effects after being absorbed into the blood and tissues. One of the main effects of ginsenosides may be on the stress systems of animals and humans, where it is thought that ginsenosides are able to reduce the release or effects of corticosterone and cortisol. In this way ginsenosides protect the organism from stress and this provides significant and wide ranging health effects on the consumer.
