Albizia julibrissin Saponins and Cancer

Albizia julibrissin is a plant commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine for its therapeutic effects. Parts of the plant are used for various health effects in traditional medicine. In particular, the medicinal uses of the plant centre around its effects on the central nervous system, that may confer anxiolytic effects. However, studies show that the herb may possess significant effects against cancer cells. For example, researchers have investigated the anti-angiogenic effects of the herb in cell models of cancer. Angiogenesis is an important aspect of cancer development because the blood vessels formed in the angiogenic process are required by the tumour for blood supply and they allow the tumour to grow. By inhibiting the angiogenic process, Albizia julibrissin may confer significant anti-cancer effects. The active component that may have these effects are the saponins contained within the plant. This supports the traditional Chinese medical use for the herb as a general tonic to prevent disease and improve health.
