Fortified Food: Are they Desirable?

Fortification of foods is not a new phenomenon. In certain countries vitamin D is already added to cow’s milk and folic acid is added to bread. The idea behind fortification is to provide the populace with the nutrition they require, particularly relating to nutrients that may prevent serious disease. However, fortification is a fine line to tread and some see fortification as forced medication. Ethically fortification needs to be voluntary, transparent and free from any harm in any group within the population. Attitudes towards fortification vary between individuals and between countries. However, the attitude to fortification may be improved if proper information is given as to the benefits of the fortification. This was found in a survey in Germany that involved the fortification of apples with selenium. Once the purpose of the fortification was explained the study participants were more open to the idea. Therefore any fortification of foods needs to be preceded by the appropriate level of education on the benefits of that food.
