Beetroot Supplements and Liver Disease

Nitric oxide is an important signal molecule. Evidence suggests that supplements that can increase levels of nitric oxide may have significant health effects. Beetroot is very high in nitric oxide and evidence suggests that supplements of beetroot powder may have some beneficial effects. Some evidence suggests that one disease that betteroot may be beneficial against is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. For example, in one study, researchers fed subjects with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease a beetroot powder supplement for 12 weeks. The results of the study showed that the supplement was significantly beneficial at reducing the liver enzymes that were elevated as a result of the disease. In addition, the lipid profiles of the subjects were significantly improved indicating improved liver function. This suggests that beetroot powder may be significantly beneficial at treating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, perhaps through a nitric oxide pathway mechanism that improves the metabolism in the liver.
