What Is The Most Healthy Food Group? Legumes and Pulses?

A healthy diet is the cornerstone of good health. Without a balanced diet containing high quality foods, the development of disease is almost guaranteed. There are many foods that can comprise a healthy diet, but of these, which is the most beneficial? One food that could be considered amongst the most beneficial with regard to health benefits are legumes and pulses. Peas and beans have been consistently shown in studies to provide significant health benefits including weight loss and protection from Western lifestyle diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Perhaps the benefits of beans are demonstrated best by one study that showed weight loss effects in hyperlipidaemics who consumed half a can of tinned beans in tomato sauce. Even the sugar in the sauce could not negate the benefits of the beans. More interestingly, the subject made no other changes to their diet to achieve the weight loss. Legumes and pulses are therefore a superfood that could be argued to be one of the healthiest of all foods.
