Tribulus terrestris: Neuroprotective?

Tribulus terrestris is a plant used in traditional medicine for its anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, antispasmodic, cardioprotective, diuretic, immunomodulatory and nervous system activity. Evidence suggests that Tribulus terrestris contains phytochemicals that confer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on the consumer. These antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects confer significant neuroprotective effects to those who consume it. Animal studies show that rats may benefit from the neuroprotective effects of Tribulus terrestris. For example, in one study researcher induced neurotoxicity on rats using monosodium glutamate which was observed to give them neurological problems. When rats were administered extracts of Tribulus terrestris leaves the negative effects of the monosodium glutamate were attenuated. The extracts of Tribulus terrestris also increase brain levels of important antioxidant enzymes in the rats, reduced lipid peroxidation and raised levels of monoamine neurotransmitters.
