The Psychology of Weight Loss: Biochemical Individuality

whey proteinMost off the shelf diet plans will work for most people, at least for a short while. The ability of all diets to cause weight loss is likely a combination of the fact that energy restriction causes weight loss that includes considerable amounts of muscle mass, and possibly partly because of the placebo effect. However, a diet should not be judged on its ability to cause short terms weight loss, but on its ability to cause long term fat loss. Some individuals are lucky enough to find a diet plan that works for them, but for most the generic nature of the plans will not suit their needs. The acceptance that we are all different is highly important in any fat loss strategy because it necessitates continual tinkering with eating plans and food consumption in order to extract the best results. We all react differently to foods and macronutrient ratios and for this reason it is necessary to become your own nutritionist and to accept that any optimally tailored plan has to ultimately be created by yourself.

Biochemical individuality is an important consideration in any healthy eating plan. Find what works for you and use it to tailor a unique plan. The acceptance that you are unique amongst humans and that no person alive or dead has shared your genetic code should be an inspiration that you must harness.

Beware therefore the snake oil salesman that claim a particular diet will have a particular effect. How does he know the effect of this diet in you? How does he know how your unique biochemical make-up will react is a beneficial way to the dietary changes. Determining what is a healthy diet is difficult because it is slightly different to different people. Eskimos eat a healthy diet that contains high amounts of fish and little plant food. The populations of the Mediterranean eat high amounts of plant foods, drink reasonable amounts of alcohol and supplement this with fatty meats and dairy. Both of these diets are healthy to the individuals that consume them, but are very different. The thing they have in common is they are absent sugar and processed carbohydrates, fats and meats. Therefore unique biochemical individuality is important in finding a healthy diet for oneself, and such a diet will then lead to fat loss. Biochemical individuality is also the reason that fat loss rates will vary between individuals.
