The Health Benefits of Apples

Fruit and vegetables have been shown to have potential health benefits. In particular, fruit and vegetables may cause weight loss and protect from cardiovascular disease and cancer. Apples are a healthy high quality foods that are relatively low in energy and high in phytochemical nutrients. The main nutrients in apples are sugars, but these are accompanied by soluble pectin fibre and a high water content. Therefore while apples provide energy, they do not lead to weight gain as the energy is diluted and the absorption of the sugars slowed by the fibre. Apples are also a source if antioxidant chemicals and these can include vitamin C and polyphenol including flavonoids. These antioxidants may protect from disease because they prevent oxidative stress that can result from free radicals. The high fibre and antioxidant content of apple makes them a health alternative to processed and packaged foods. However, as with all fruit, intake should be moderated due to the presence of a high sugar content.
