The Good and Bad Side of Peanuts

Evidence suggests that peanuts can be a healthy food, but that the health effect gained will depend on how they are consumed. Peanuts are actually pulses, which means they are the seeds  of leguminous plants. Legumes and pulses have been shown to be beneficial to the heath because of the blood sugar stabilising effects they have. These effects in turn cause weight loss. Peanuts share this health benefit in common with other pulses such as beans and peas, and this relates to the fibre they contain. As well as fibre, the peanut also contains a high amount of protein and fat that make it a good source of energy. Consuming a moderate amount of peanuts, perhaps as roasted monkey nuts is a good way to improve the diet. However, the high fat content of peanuts means that consumption should be moderated so as not to consume too much energy. Therefore eating ready shelled peanuts, with added salt or flavouring can be potentially damaging to the health if moderation is not maintained and overconsumption occurs.
