The Effects of Boron Supplementation On Testosterone

A number of supplements that purport to raise testosterone levels in humans contain boron. One of the suggestions made by the manufacturers is that boron supplementation can raise testosterone levels. However, a number of well designed studies have shown this to be unlikely. For example, in one study researchers administered 2.5 mg of boron per day to male bodybuilders for 7 weeks. The results of the study showed that whilst the body building training was able to cause significant increases in testosterone and skeletal muscle, the boron supplementation did not have any significant effects. One thing to also note is that even if boron could raise blood levels of testosterone, there is no guarantee that this would translate into increases in skeletal muscle mass. The moral of this story is that lifting weights is one of the best ways to naturally raise levels of testosterone and it is proven to build skeletal muscle. Part of this strategy should be a healthy diet, which hopefully will already contain optimal levels of boron.
