Physical Activity Versus Diet: Weight Loss

Weight loss is a highly complex subject and often the results from weight loss plans differ between individuals. However, there are certain themes that can be generalised upon to provide some clarity. The first thing to say is that many choose exercise as a means to lose weight, yet do not realise that exercise stimulates the appetite. In some this appetite stimulation is often enough to counter any excess energy burnt during exercise. The second thing to say is that reducing energy intake, by going on a diet, will increase the efficiency of the body such that only short term weight loss will occur. It must also be emphasised here that weight gain in the form of muscle may accompany exercise, whilst weight loss from energy restriction may actually be muscle rather than fat. The last thing to say on weight loss is that consistently the best way to cause improvements in body composition is consuming a high quality diet in combination with moderate exercise to cause muscle mass gains and in combination with body fat reductions.
