Mint: The Ultimate Garden Plant?

Mint plants are a group of flowering plants that belong to the Mentha genus within the Lamiaceae family. Mint plants are characterised by their distinctive smell and taste, which is often used to flavour sweets and candies. Mentha spicata is a very common variety of mint that grows natively in many parts of the world but is native to Europe and Asia. Mentha spicata is also commonly called spearmint, garden mint, lambs mint or common mint. The plant is rich in an essential oil that gives it its characteristic smell and state and also high in antioxidant nutrients. Mint is a healthy food and can be added to a number of dishes including boiled vegetables and salads in order to add flavour. One of the main advantages of garden mint is that it is very easy to grow and a large amount of mint can be grown and harvested in a short amount of time. In fact mint grows well at temperate climates that it is often considered invasive and for this reason is often grown in containers to stop it spreading.
