Melon Juice as an Anti-Stress Drink

A dietary supplement of melon juice concentrate containing the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase has been developed and is called Extramel. This supplement may have beneficial health effects including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This may confer significant protection on the consumer from conditions associated with free radical damage and inflammation, including stress. For example, in one study, researchers investigated the effects of Extramel containing 140 IU of superoxide dismutase per day for 4 weeks, on the stress and fatigue of human volunteers. The results of the study showed that signs and symptoms of stress and fatigue linked to performance, physical (pain, sleep troubles), cognitive (concentration, weariness, sleep troubles) or behavioural (attitude, irritability, difficulty of contact) improved significantly with Extramel. The authors also noted that there were no adverse effects observed in the subjects following consumption of the melon concentrate supplement.

Like many fruits, melon is a rich source of phytochemicals, many of which may have beneficial health effects. The Extramel supplement used in this study is a proprietary freeze-dried melon juice concentrate obtained by crushing melon, recovering the pulp, then centrifuging, filtering and freeze-drying the pulp to create a supplement rich in nutrients from the melon. Extramel contains high levels of superoxide dismutase and other antioxidants.
