Is Yoghurt and Anti-Stress Food?

The gut has been shown to be intricately linked to the brain. This connection is via a large neuronal network that extends throughout the gut, as well as a substantial hormonal system designed to carry signals from the gut to the brain, and vice versa. The health of the gut has been shown to be directly linked to mental health and improvements in gut health caused by eating healthy foods may reduce the chronic effects of stress, that may include negative changes to brain chemistry and mood. Yoghurt has been shown to significantly improve the health of the gut, and this may in turn reduce the stress response of the individual. In one study, consuming yoghurt enriched with alpha-lactalbumin, casein tripeptides and B vitamins over a period of weeks was shown to be able to significantly reduce feelings of inefficiency as well as significantly improve vigour and the recovery index of individuals with high-trait anxiety. Consuming yoghurt may therefore reduce the perception of stress and improve mental outlook.
