Herbal Teas and Antioxidants

Evidence shows that black and green tea are rich in antioxidants, and it is these antioxidants that provide tea with some of its health effects. Antioxidants are important components of a healthy diet because they accumulate in tissues and protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. However, both green and black tea contain caffeine, and some people choose not to drink them for this reason. Others avoid tea because they simply do not like the taste. Alternatives to green and black tea have become popular in recent years, and many herbal teas are now available to the consumer. Berry tea, chamomile tea and peppermint tea are some of the commonest herbal teas available, and so it is of interest nutritionally that these teas are also rich in antioxidants. Although the exact antioxidant type varies between different types of herbal tea, they still supply a good amount and often a wide range of plant antioxidants. Most herbal teas will be antioxidant rich, because they originate from plant material which is rich in antioxidants.
