Herbal Mouth Wash: Anti-Inflammatory Protection

Oral health is relatively simple. There is a necessity to maintain the normal healthy flora and fauna present in the mouth by obtaining food that does not promote the growth of pathogenic microorganisms, while at the same time limiting inflammation of the oral cavity. Along with a general care to the teeth through proper washing and protection from damage, these two things should ensure optimal oral health. One way to limit inflammation and reduce the growth of pathogenic microorganisms is through use of herbal preparations, which can be given as a mouthwash or as a tea for consumption. For example, in one study researchers investigated the effects of a number of common herbs on the oral health of a group of healthy subjects. Camelia sinensis (tea), Azadirachta indica (neem), Anacardium occidentale (cashew), Schinus terebinthifolius (Brazilian pepper tree) and Curcuma longa (turmeric) all showed potentially beneficial effects against inflammation and dental plaque formation.
