Good Types of Sugar

Sugar is chemically called sucrose. Consuming sugar in its refined and crystalline form, as is found in granulated table sugar, is associated with a number of negative health effects including obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, dental caries and cancer. However, not all forms of sugar are detrimental to health. Fruit is one form of sugar that can have health benefits, likely because of the fibre it contains. Consuming sugar in the form of fruit protects the consumer from many of the same diseases that are caused by the consumption of refined crystalline sugar. Another overlooks beneficial form of sugar is found in honey. Consistently studies suggest that honey possesses a number of health benefits, particularly against infection and illness, perhaps because of the antioxidants it contains. Lastly, molasses is a form of sugar that is made from concentrated cane sugar. However, molasses also contain very high amounts of minerals, particularly iron, and these minerals may provide significant health benefits to the consumer.
