Ginkgo biloba protects from Diabetic Nephropathy

Diabetes is an increasingly common disorder of glucose and insulin metabolism. When managed correctly diabetics can lead a reasonably normal life through the use of lifestyle changes and the use of synthetic insulin, both of which allow blood glucose levels to be controlled. However, over the long-term diabetics are at a higher risk of certain diseases, including complications to the kidney. In this regard diabetic nephropathy is a common disorder associated with diabetes that results in damage to the kidney and a diminished ability to excrete and recycle waste products. Ginkgo biloba is a herb that has been shown to provide protection against the development of diabetic nephropathy in animal models. One explanation for this is the ability of Ginkgo biloba to reduce elevated blood glucose levels. Downstream effects of this reduction appear to be reductions in tissue levels of transglutaminase which are often elevated in cases of high blood glucose as seen with diabetes.
