Fish: Not All The Same

A number of lines of evidence suggest that fish is beneficial to the health. In particular, fish may improve cognition and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the exact health effects obtained from fish will depend on the types of fish consumed. Cold water fish such as mackerel, fresh tuna and trout are perhaps the fish with the most well known health effects and this relates to the presence of long chain marine oils in the fish. These oils belong to the omega-3 group of oils and consuming them may confer significant anti-inflammatory effects. However, white fish such as cod and plaice also confer significant health effects. In particular, regular consumption of white fish is associated with improvements in cognition, perhaps because of the presence of dimethylethylamine (DMAE) in the fish. Therefore different fish may confer different health effects and as with nutrition generally, the healthiest diet is one which contains a range of foods that takes advantage of a range of health benefits.
