Does Creatine Cause Subcutaneous Water Retention?

Creatine monohydrate is a dietary supplement that increases the muscle content of creatine phosphate. The accumulation of creatine in muscle tissue is interesting because the resultant creatine phosphate stores may allow a more prolonged contraction cycle from the muscle, particularly during intense exercise. As a result the supplements is often used by athletes for their ergogenic benefit. It is known that the extra creatine stores are associated with a retention of water in the muscle tissue, and there is some evidence that this extra water may confer some ergogenic benefits. However, some users report that with creatine supplementation there is a pronounced retention of water under the skin, causing a bloating effect. Whether this is a general effect, or is specific to some individuals is not clear. One thing is certain from the studies to date, and that is that the effects of creatine do appear to be different for each individual. Therefore trial and error is perhaps the only way to understand the individual’s response to the supplement.
