Diet and Lifestyle for Mental Health

Mood disorders have been shown to be more prevalent in those with poor diet and unhealthy lifestyles. In one study researchers tested a diet and lifestyle programme to see how it affected mood in the subjects. Subjects consumed plant based protein and gluten free sources of grains. Nuts and seeds were included in the diet as well as teas, filtered water and organic fruit juice. Flaxseed oil was used along with other unprocessed ols, and fruits and vegetable intakes were increased. Herbs and spices high in antioxidants and other phytochemicals were also provided. Participants were encouraged to eat protein smoothies and make juiced drinks to provide nutrients. At the same time they decluttered their living space and made sure their environment was clean and safe. Exercise consisted of 45-60 min of power walking 5 days per week. The results of the study showed that after 12 weeks there was a significant reduction in the anxiety and depression experienced by the subjects.
