Bacopa monnieri for Mental Health

Bacopa monnieri is a herb used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. There is evidence that the herb may possess a number of beneficial health effects that relate to its ability to affect the central nervous system. Studies on healthy individuals have found that Bacopa monnieri is able to improve certain cognitive functions including auditory verbal learning tasks, digit span-reverse tests, inspection time tasks and working memory. In addition, Bacopa monnieri may also have the ability to improve mood, with some studies showing that there are antidepressant and anxiolytic effects conferred by the herb. However, the studies using human subjects are far more limited compared to the extensive animal studies. The active principles within Bacopa monnieri that are thought to be a group of steroidal saponins including bacosides A (a mixture of bacoside A3, bacopaside II, bacopaside X, and bacopasaponin C). Including extracts of Bacopa monnieri as part of a healthy diet may have positive mental health effects.
