Arnica Montana For Tissue Injuries

Arnica montana (Leopard’s Bane) is a plant that has been evidenced to possess significant anti-inflammatory effects. These effects may relate to the presence of a group of phytochemicals called sesquiterpene lactones that includes the main active principle helenalin. Evidence suggests that arnica has a use in sports performance because it may be used to reduce muscle soreness after extreme exercise. Some studies have suggested that arnica is not useful as an anti-inflammatory in its homeopathic form, that is a highly dilute form of the herb that might contain no active principle. This is not surprising as for there to be an active effect and active principle should be present. However, arnica in its herbal form, containing sesquiterpenes lactones does have evidenced anti-inflammatory effects. If arnic is therefore to be used it should always be taken in its herbal form and the anti-inflammatory sesquiterpene lactones should be present in any formulation used to treat soft tissue injuries.
